I tested the Practical Peripherals 2400 bps external modem for a few days. I found it to be very good for an inexpensive modem. I missed the DTR light, but many people will not. It does pass break signals, a problem with some inexpensive modems. A couple of times it started spitting out garbage at the end of a call. The only way to stop it was to power off the modem. I did try it as an answering modem with RBBS 14.1D and found that it did not operate correctly, so some of its responses and/or timing must differ from a Hayes. Also, when configuring the modem, some of the responses to commands had bad parity.

> > I'm pricing mailorder 2400 baud modems... There is a U. S. Robotics 2400 baud modem that is sold at a steep discount in a number of magazines - I got mine for $169 mailorder and have seen it advertised recently for $159. It seems to work quite well - the only 2400 baud modem I have any trouble connecting with is another USR (!) on the West Coast. It doesn't come with a lot of documentation or MNP, but seems like a good deal.
