The SXT devices are a generalized hack on the XT devices used for the BLIT and 5620 terminals. With System V as with all other versions of UNIX, you get what you pay for. -Ron

I have made many hundreds of bug fixes to the AT&T UNIX System V source code contained in the BRL System V emulation. I think AT&T should pay somebody competent to re-code virtually all the "supported" user mode utilities. (I have seen a couple that were done nicely, but they are the exception rather than the rule.)
