[comp.dcom.modems] Looking for a modem which speaks FAX

Is there such a thing as a modem which has RS-232 or RS-422 on one
side and emits FAX tones on the other?  The idea would be to be able
to transmit a file, rather than a piece of paper, to a fax machine,
or receive one the same way.

Any info appreciated.
