[comp.dcom.modems] downloading from non-unix systems

blair@obdient.UUCP (Doug Blair) (02/11/88)

Greetings Netlanders:

My apologies if you've seen this one before - a similar inquiry was
sent to comp.unix.questions a week or two back and the responses
have not been as helpful as I had hoped.

I have been given the task of setting up a system which will automatically

1 - call our local Tymnet dialup
2 - log on to The Source
3 - instruct The Source to transmit a specific datafile
4 - capture the datafile into a unix file
5 - log off Tymnet (we're not made of money)
6 - send the data file to several users via email
7 - send the data file to a remote printer reached via dialup

This will probably involve a shell script starting cu and reading cu's
output (to receive various prompts) and echoing things back to the
transmit side of the cu process (to send passwords etc). I had hoped
to set this up using the "chat scripts" in the /usr/lib/uucp/Systems
(Yes, we have HDB) file but of course those only seem to work in
conjunction with uucico - and Tymnet and The Source don't act like
unix machines. No, we don't have the src files, just Microport SysV/386
on an 80386 clone.

I'd prefer to write this locally unless you've found a communications
language/program that'll do just this - in which case we have a modest
budget available.

Any suggestions or hints you have along this line will be GREATLY
appreciated. PLEASE RESPOND BY EMAIL - I'll post a summary of
responses THAT WORK :-) to this group.

Thanks!

Doug Blair
