I just acquired a NEC N2420/30 modem at a `fire sale', but with no documentation. Upon switching my Hayes 1200 out and putting the NEC in (on my terminal), nothing happened. Anyone with experience using this? Or with an address/phone # for NEC? On the front panel: LED's TR MR SD RD CO OH TM MC 24 12 3 Underneath, the following toggle switches: /-- Data Rate --\ /-- Test Loop --\ 24 12 3 SYN ASY T/D DL AL RDL ST [NB: The `T/D' is a depress (not toggle) switch only; it also (for some bizarre reason) allows two of the `Data Rate' switches to be `in' at once] On the back panel, there is a strange round 4-prong power adapter, the two standard Telco line and Telco set RJ11 jacks, a small volume knob, and finally some unknown switch labelled `Mode' with an `A' or `B' setting. When I power it on, the only LED which lights is `MC' (unlike my Hayes, which lights Terminal Ready and Modem Ready). Pushing in various combinations of the `Test Loop' buttons causes the other LEDs to light in various patterns. It does seem to be able to recognize the speed settings. If anyone can tell me more about this modem, or if it sounds like it is broken, or how to reach NEC to get a manual, I'd appreciate it. -- Greg Earle earle@mahendo.JPL.NASA.GOV Indep.
