[comp.dcom.modems] Any use for old AT&T Digital Dataphones?

earle@mahendo.Jpl.Nasa.Gov (Greg Earle) (04/02/88)

Auctions around these parts are spewing out old AT&T Digital Dataphones.
They can be had for ~ $10 each. I passed on getting a set of Digital 9600's
and Digital 56Kb's last time; another auction is coming and more 9600's are
coming up. From what I can tell they [the 9600's] have an RS-232 jack and a
standard 4-wire telephone connection output. They appear to be around 4 years
old.

Now it's obvious that they don't have any dialer capability; could one do
a manual dial and manually connect two of them together, or is it hopeless
without a much higher grade leased line (Telebits, these ain't)? Given
the essentially non-existent cost, are low-grade leased lines mega-expensive?

In other words, should I waste $20 on a couple of these, or are they just
fancy paperweights at this stage? (I had this idea of presenting any company
I work for the chance to merely pay for the leased line, so I could run SLIP
and get them a `free' Internet connection.)
