[comp.dcom.modems] Telebit offer in Canada?

lyndon@ncc.Nexus.CA (Lyndon Nerenberg) (04/28/88)

It seems some people are under the delusion that the half-price
offer is still available in Canada. Well, although it was (once
again) extended in the U.S., Telebit Canada has not seen fit to
do the same. In The Great White North the offer expired March 31st.

Putting on my "authorized dealer" hat, I would like to suggest
to Telebit (U.S.) that they have a talk with Germain and try to
explain to her that being gready isn't making her any more money,
it's just driving Canadian customers to (illegally) purchase
gray market modems from the U.S. This benefits no one, and should
stop NOW!

No delusions about it. Let's look at that press release again:

)This offer has been posted previously to the USENET. However, note that
)the offer has been extended until June 30, 1988. Feel free to contact us
                    ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
)if you have any questions or wish to place an order. Please send to the
)path noted in the announcement below if you wish to order via email.

)****************** TELEBIT USENET/UUCP PROGRAM **********************
)
)Telebit Corporation is offering a special 50% promotional discount off the
)TrailBlazer Plus modem to mapped USENET/UUCP sites. This offer is available
)until June 30, 1988.

....

)/*****
)/* WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?
)/*****
)
)In order to participate in the Telebit USENET/UUCP modem purchase program
)your site must be located in one of the 50 United States or Canada, and
                                            ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
)your site must be registered in the USENET/UUCP maps. If you have multiple
)sites, you may purchase modems for a maximum of two (2) sites, with a total
)limit of four (4) modems per organization.

Seems that Telebit is the one with delusions. I'd call this false
advertising if true. I assume that Telebit will be happy to clarify the
situation. I know that I specifically planned on taking advantage of the
offer later in the year.

The information I received was from the people at Telebit Technologies
Canada (Toronto). They stated quite explicitly that the offer was not
being extended in Canada. Keep in mind that Telebit Technologies Canada
is completely independent from Telebit in the US. As far as I know, the
US company has no holdings in the Canadian operation.

We have been thinking of putting together our own "usenet" offer for
Canada. Although we can't offer the modems at half price, we could
put them out the door for $1695 each if there's enough interest.

I had been unaware that there was a misunderstanding until I read
Lyndon's and Stuart's notes. I spoke to Germaine this afternoon.
TTC Telebit Canada will honour the extension of the half-price offer
for registered UUCP sites.

As you may know, Telebit is a corporate sponsor of /usr/group/cdn.
We have been assisting them in setting up a Unix system, so they can
be on the Net (shortly). They have provided /usr/group/cdn with two
modems which are currently deployed at ontmoh and at tmsoft.

At the Unix '88 conference and show (Toronto, May 17-19) we plan to
have a courtesy terminal at the /usr/group/cdn booth, so our busy
Unix users can read their mail, etc. We'll have the use of a
Trailblazer there, so you can try it out (and get a new Unix-specific
brochure, if you ask for it :-).

I hope everyone is happy again. See you at the Unix show. If you would
like to be involved in any of /usr/group/cdn's technical activities,
please r(eply) or post to the brand new comp.org.usrgroup.

Alright - so I blew it :-) I finally managed to get through to
Telebit in Toronto to clarify things. It turns out that my
previous statements were wrong Wrong WRONG! [thanks, Steve]

Telebit Technologies Canada has extended the 2 for 1 offer. It will
run until June 30th. I have been assured it will *not* be extended
beyond that date.

TTC had planned to stop the promotion on March 31st, however a number
of people thought it unfair that US customers enjoy the discount
while the Canadians were being left in the cold (so to speak), and
phoned TTC to let them know this.

I must also retract my statements about TTC's "price gouging", etc.
After discussing the overhead involved (in time, FST, duty, etc)
it turns out that TTC is losing money on each of these sales.

If your (Canadian) Telebit salescritter says the offer is no longer
available, have them call Toronto and get their facts straight.
