[comp.dcom.modems] MNP Classes 7/8/9 - what do they give you ?

jmh@eagle.ukc.ac.uk (Jim Hague) (06/10/88)

I came across a Microcom ad yesterday that alluded to some MNP
classes I haven't come across before, 7-9. Can some kind soul
give a summary of what these do ?

The ad (Datamation, BTW) seemed to hint that Class 9 is a V.32
engine with Telcor-standard data compression, giving a claimed
38,400 bps throughput. Just as predicted in the Byte article.
Can anybody comment on whether this sort of compression is for
real ? I can concede it possible for text, but how about sending
already compressed news ? On these figures, it seems the data compression
algorithm is around twice as effective as LZW. Any other comments ?
