[comp.dcom.modems] Modem manager

chris@spock (Chris Ott) (05/27/88)

Okay, everybody, I've got an idea. I'm looking for a modem. From the
reading I've done in this newsgroup, a lot of other people are, too. In
order to make sure I get the best possible value, I went through a computer
magazine (Computer Shopper) and found the lowest price for each brand of
modem. I will list them here and I would like anybody who has any experience
with any of them to email me and tell me about it. If no one else volunteers,
I will maintain the list and, anytime someone is looking for a modem, I
will mail them the list, with your comments attached. Does that sound like
a good idea? I would also appreciate comments as to which modems have error
correction, how long the guarantee is, etc. Also, if anyone wants to
volunteer to be the "modem manager", let me know.

Okay, here's the list. By the way, all the modems on this list are
external. I don't have an IBM PC, so I can't use the the internal ones.

Not too bad - seems to work here.

JUNK!!! bad!! For an outdial - ok. But when this modem answers at 1200,
it will not answer again at 2400, until power is cycled, or ATZ is sent
the modem - something Unix doesn't do.

Very good. You set the talk rate to 9600 bps, and the modem will
translate to 2400/1200/300. Makes /etc/gettydefs easy. As well, with
the MNP 5 I have been able to get 380 cps out of this modem - not bad
     for a 240 cps device!

You don't have a single NEC modem on the list. In my experience, the
NEC modems are well worth their significantly higher cost over the cheap
plastic Anchor, et. al. modems.
