[comp.dcom.modems] TB+ and uucico

bill@carpet.WLK.COM (Bill Kennedy) (07/08/88)

Perhaps this is an old question but I haven't seen anything on it recently.
I have a luggable 12MHz AT clone, Microport V/AT, TB+ internal, brand new
(carpet) and a 16MHz 386 AT clone, AT&T 386 UNIX, TB+ standalone, new (ssbn).
Both systems are running HDB uucp, 9600bps. I notice some large differences
in sending and receiving data rate. I'm aware that the transfer rates are a
little slower receiving than sending but not this much.

When carpet (286, internal TB+) sends to ssbn (386, stand alone) the files
run along as you'd expect, 900+ cps, faster on the X files. Nothing from
carpet is going compressed but both modems are set for compression. When
the session turns around and ssbn is sending to carpet the data rate drops
to around 500cps for average size files, 380cps or so for small files, and
always under 100cps for the X files. There are some compressed news batches
coming from ssbn. I see similar performance with another TB+ neighbor, I
can send incredibly fast but receiving is slower than I think it should be.

I used the register settings, Dialers, Devices, and Systems setup that were
posted to this group by the (thank you!) Telebit folks. I'm delighted with
500cps coming from 208-210cps with 2400bps modems but I think that the two
transfer rates should be closer together and I am guessing that I have
introduced some delay that makes the X files (receiving) take so long.

Have I outsmarted myself and tried to compress compressed data? Should I
disable compression? Or maybe I should be glad I got double the speed on
the D files and be happy with what I have. If I have omitted some strategic
detail please let me know so I can ask enough of a question to answer.

Oh, there is one detail. Each is running the later version of uucico that
understands the modem control (,M in Devices, \M and \m in Dialers) in case
that might affect something. I'd register fiddle but I'm afraid of breaking
what I have. Many thanks,
