[comp.dcom.modems] Maxon MAX 2400 review

BEC.SHAPIN@ECLA.USC.EDU (Ted Shapin) (07/13/88)

I recently bought a MAX 2400 modem made by Maxon Systems, (415)377-
0202, Foster City, CA, a subsidiary of a Korean company. Our computer
club made a group purchase and we paid $100 each.

This is an external modem with lights, a volume control, and separate
power supply. It works at 300, 1200, and 2400 baud and uses the Hayes
AT command set. It also handles synchronous transmission at 1200 and
2400. It is fast at recognizing busy tones. It has forward error
correction which it can use automatically if talking to another Maxon
modem or this feature can be disabled. It comes with a well-written
manual, good for novice users.

I have used it to call a number of different BBS's and mainframe
modems. The first unit I got gave garbage characters at 2400 baud on
some systems. I exchanged it for a second unit which works very well.

This seems to be a new design since I have a serial number in the
500's.

I would recommend it, provided you have the opportunity to test it and
exchange it if there is a problem.
