Comark "Desktalk II" modem is 2400BPS,Fully Hayes Compat.,sync or
async, error correction optional(both modems must have it to work),
and has 5 year warranty. It is also upgradable to 4800 BPS. This
involves sending it back so they can install & test a chip. The 5
year warranty also restarts. Works great! Comark
2400BPS modem - $159.- 135 N. Brandon Drive
4800BPS modem - $399.- Glendale Hts. IL. 60139

I'm also using a Desktalk II. It's worked satisfactorily for a couple of
weeks now. More comments:

The 2400bps external version is now $149, down from the earlier $159
(Internal version is less.)
The MNP level-4 (2400bps ext.) version is currently $229.
(I don't know about the 4800bps units.)
A male-to-female rs232 cable is needed; Comark will sell you one for $12.

Features:
"fully compatible" with Hayes AT commands & register set.
	Bell 103/212, CCIT V.22/V.22bis
internal speaker with software volume control
line jack and phone jack on unit
	external power supply
	lotsa "Power-On" LEDs, labelled HS,AA,RI,OH,CD,TD,RD,RTS,CTS,DTR,DSR
and they blink engagingly when I type (:-) :-) :-)
some sort of terminal emulator for MS-DOS -- seems to work, ohboy...
	company spells "compatible" correctly
Massive heat sink on a power transistor inside. Leaving clearance
for this sink seems to account for most of the external's size

Overall, I'm happy (==satisfied) with it, enough that I'm about ready to sell
my old reliable USR Password finally. I kind of wish I'd gotten the MNP
version; I heard a rumor that you can upgrade to this, but the manual says
nothing about this. In contrast, it does make passing mention of an upgrade
to 4800bps. I had to ask them for a warranty card, which wasn't packed (and
which I haven't sent back in yet, now that I think of it...)

I bought my first at $179 at a show a year ago and it still works fine.

According to the people I talked to at Incomm Data who build the modem
the 4800 is a 2400 with MNP compression (Level-5?) to get double speed

The speaker is a tiny one and distorts badly the dial tone and dialing
if you turn it up to here call progress. I just set it low and let the modem
do the work.

The modem uses a z80 to drive it and I suspect its just a eprom change to
support MNP-4. They did imply an addon card to support 4800.

Since I got my first one I got 12 more for work to use for uucp. Not as nice
as a Telebit but far less money. I haven't had any problem using it for both
inbound and outbound uucp on the same line under Xenix.

It does save the speed you used to set the modem up with so that an ATZ or
DTR toggle will put the modem back where you want it. Watch out for some
uucico's tho because it does need about .5 sec after a CR to execute before
it will take the next command. (Attention Apollo users: I have patched uucico
to work with the modem under DOMAIN/IX 9.5 - SR10 HDB works great out of the
box. send e-mail for the 9.5 executables) I belive the 4.2BSD uucico
dialers also have this type of problem because they send CR ATD # CR.

I don't know what extra you get if you buy the Incomm name. The best price
has to be from Comark / USAFLEX in Glendale Hts, Il.
