[comp.dcom.modems] Long response time from TB+

john@wa3wbu.UUCP (John Gayman) (10/09/88)

After having my Trailblazer Plus for nearly a year, I am generally
very satisfied with its performance. There is one area which seems to
be a sore spot and generally causes problems for everyone. This is the
long period of time required for two TB+'s to sync up.

This seems to be something that would be correctable in firmware. The
answering sequence is unusually long. The modem appears to sit on the
"third" answer tone *forever* before kicking into the PEP sequence. Is
there some particular reason that it can't initiate PEP after a few seconds
of tone such as is the case with 1200/2400 baud ? This would all but
totally eliminate the uucico timeout problems.

Also, I noticed in the manual that the length of time you set your
S7 register (carrier timeout) also effects the amount of time your modem
will take to sync up. Is there some reason for this that isn't apparent
to me ? I'm not sure why, that if I decide to allow 120 second carrier
timeout, this would require my modem to listen to the low-tone for ~60
seconds on an in-coming call.

Both of the problems mentioned above seem relatively trivial yet cause
major headaches on long distant calls. Anyone with any feedback and/or
explainations ? Thanks.
