Ok, maybe it's a bum deal, I don't know, but they were cheap... I recently expanded my modem collection by buying two Hayes SM1200 OEM modem boards at Halted, here in Sunnyvale, CA. They were selling them for $12.00 (yes, that's twelve!), so I couldn't resist. I bought one, and zapped the Z8 chip. So, I bought another. These OEM modems are external, have no switches, LED's or box. It's just a PC board, with about 12 IC's, and some resistors, etc. The board does not generate RS-232 levels, so a 1488/89 type convertor circuit is necessary. After wiring up the whole rats-nest, I tried talking to the thing, and hey! It responds. I can examine all the S-registers, and set them, etc. However, when I try to dial out, nada. If I listen on the line, I can hear the faint touch-tones. Ma bell can't hear them, however, because the dial-tone never goes away. The first one I tried had this problem, so I brought it back and exchanged it. The next one does too. My question? Has anyone heard of these things?? Or know anything about them?? I'd really like to get one going, for the hell of it. It seems to me, that two such boards couldn't have the *exact* problem, so maybe I'm screwing up in some way. Any help would be appreciated. OBTW; Halted deals in used & junk electronic hardware (anyone want an RK05 for $125???). Thanks... - Der -- Reply: dtynan@sultra.UUCP (Der Tynan @ Tynan Computers) {mips, pyramid}!sultra!dtynan Cast a cold eye on life, on death. Horseman, pass by... [WBY]
