[comp.dcom.modems] General Telebit Information

rls@telebit.UUCP (Richard Siegel) (10/21/88)

In response to a fairly large number of postings and mail messages about
a variety of subjects that all relate to Telebit, I thought I'd just clear up
a few items that seem to interest quite a number of people.

1. The Usenet offer for buying Telebit TrailBlazer Plus modems at a 50%
discount has been extended for one last time (really!) to expire on
December 31, 1988. If you need details, I just posted it a few days
ago, but if you haven't seen it, send mail to telebit!modems and request
   a copy of the offer.

2. Many people have been discussing FAX modems on this newsgroup. With regard
to FAX and Telebit modems, we do not have any short-term plans to offer a
FAX upgrade to the TrailBlazer Plus (don't want to get your hopes up!).

However, we certainly know how to implement the Group 3 modulation and have
it running on a variety of prototypes. It is a possiblilty that there may
be a future product which might incorporate other modulations such as FAX,
but not in the near future. I can't say anything more than that - sorry!

3. We recently introduced a new modem, the T1000, which offers most of the
features of a TrailBlazer Plus, including the UUCP protocol support, for
only $795 list. The critical differences are:

     a. It is smaller; about the size of a (gasp) Hayes modem. And you can
order an optional "foot" to stand it on its side, ala a deskside PC.

     b. It modulates data with PEP, and is compatible with the existing
installed base of 300, 1200, 2400 and PEP modems. However, the
maximum data rate is limited to 9600 bps throughput, as compared to
the TrailBlazer Plus' limit of 18031 bps.

     c. It does NOT provide data compression. For those of you with UUCP news
feeds, this should not be an issue. I would expect UUCP throughputs
of about 900-950 cps on a good line with this modem.

     d. Of course it is based on a similar firmware-based architecture, so
future upgrades for bug-fixes and new features will be handled just
        as in the TrailBlazer Plus.

     e. Finally, this modem is TRULY Hayes compatible. We have built another
command set into the modem which identically emulates a Hayes V9600
modem. You can literally "plug-and-play" this modem into any situation
where you would use a Hayes V9600, including (ahem) Hayes Smartcom III.

     f. For those of you who want more information about this (please excuse
the commercial aspects of this posting), call our 800-TELEBIT number
        and ask about the T1000.

I hope this clears things up for some of you. If you have appropriate NET
related information, post questions to the net, and if they are of general
interest, I will answer them. Otherwise, send technical questions or USENET
offer requests to ...telebit!modems and someone will get back to you (although
it's getting pretty busy these days, so there may be a bit of a delay in
getting back to you!). And remember, I can't really say anything about future
products - it's company policy!

Enjoy those modems! Keep the cards and letters coming!
