In most European countries, the phone systems are typical different than those in the US. In many countries, modems made for the US phone system are illegal. Also, in many European countries, the US manufacturers don't have representation. I worked on a project in which the requirement from our customer was to install a single vendor solution in 13 European countries. We could not find one vendor that was able to market their products in all 13 countries. I can't speak for Telebit or the market in West Germany, but I would assume the these modems offers would fall into one of the above scenarios. bob -- Bob Leffler - EDS, GM Truck & Bus Account (313)456-5375 bob@rel.eds.com or {uunet!edsews, rutgers, umix}!rel!bob Opinions expressed may not be those of my employer.

They don't sell their modems overseas directly, but through local distributors. Part of the reason for that is most overseas countries have a PTT (Postal, Telegraph and Telephone) agency, each of which has its own set of standards. A modem that passes the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) tests in the US has to pass testing in each separate country to be sold there. I don't think that it's very expensive to make a modem meet all relevant standards, it's just a pain in the butt that the US companies would rather not deal with. There's a large market for modems here, since we don't pay additional charges on local calls, which makes dialing up the local BBS or UNIX site effectively free after purchasing the modem. Perhaps with the CCITT becoming more of a force, we'll see an international standard ... and then again, maybe we won't ... -- James S. I know to get the Telebit deal, you call (800) TELEBIT and ask for Tessie or Debbie. But who do you contact and what number do you call to to find out about the HST and/or Hayes deals? I am a dedicated sysop from down-under, and have been BITTERLY disappointed that Hayes, Telebit and USR seem to think that the world ends at the US border. We're not exactly part of COMECON down here, (although we won't let your nuclear-capable ships into our ports for R&R!), but I don't think it's a trade issue. I think it's that these companies just don't want to mess with international support. Sure, some of them, e.g. Telebit, license their technology for external distribution, e.g. you can get a TB+ from Dowty/Case in UK or from Netcomm in Australia, but the distributors can't afford to do the special offers. Obviously it makes sense to offer special prices to sysops and UUCP sites (I run both), because such sites will be *VERY* influential in dictating which way the market will go for local compatibility. But none of the modem companies stateside have the chutzpah to think globally - despite the fact that their products are helping to make the world a smaller place! As an example, I'm about to buy a couple of TB+'s for the company I work for, in order to support software on exactly the other side of the world, Spain. But only because there is local support for the Trailblazer. So, here is the challenge. As USR, Hayes and Telebit slug it out for domination of the 9600+ bps market, who wants the Rest of The World????? I will await e-mailed offers of cut-price modems with eagerness...
