[comp.dcom.modems] ZOOM 2400-baud modems

joshua@uop.edu (Ed Bates) (10/25/88)

Anyone interested?

I received a "special limited offer for Computing Professionals" about a
2400 baud Hayes-compatible modem for $169.00, including shipping, hanling,
a "guarantee of satisfaction", and a communications program (Quick Link)
for the Macintosh. For $19.00 more, you can get a modem cable for your Mac.
(However, our Campus Computer Store is able to get these cables for under
$9.00! If you want one, shop around.)

Want more info on the modem?

It sports all eight status lamps (standard Hayes), is compact and light-
weight (5 x 6 x 1.56", to fit many places larger modems can't), and has a
monitor speaker with volume control, a second phone jack, an easily
accessible on/off switch, (of course, an RS232/DB-25 computer jack), and a
two-year warranty.

For those who are thinking about buying the Zoom modem, which sounds like
an OK deal at $169: A friend of mine purchased one of these at a local
computer show for either $109 or $119 (no cable or software, but a cable
should only be about $15 and Kermit is free). The dealer selling them
had purchased bunches of the things and was running a special for the
duration of the show. You too may be able to find a better price than
$169 if you look. (By the way, his modem seems to work just fine).
