[comp.dcom.modems] Questions on USR Courier 2400 and on 2400 bps in general

tr@wind.bellcore.com (tom reingold) (10/25/88)

I have a new USRobotics Courier 2400 bps external modem. It gets
a lot more errors than my el cheapo Everex 1200 bps internal modem
ever got. Do you suppose this is due to the higher bit rate? Or
something else?

Also, this courier always comes up in terse mode, no matter what
I set the DIP switch to. (There is a DIP switch just for this
setting.) I have to type "atv1" to get verbal codes rather than
the numeric ones. Sounds like a defect, doesn't it?

Well, I have a USR Courier 2400 external, and I usually don't have any
problems with it, except when trying to talk coast to coast to a Practical
Peripherals internal 2400 using Carbon Copy. Switching back to 1200 usually
solves the problem, but makes it miserably slow. However, the person on
the east coast says he has lots of problems with the lines there, so I'm
inclined to think the problem is not with my modem.

Yes, I'd say you have a defective DIP switch - mine seems to work just fine;
it always comes up in "atv1" mode. Call 1-800-DIAL-USR and ask USR's tech
department what to do about it.
