[comp.dcom.modems] BAUDS and BiPS proposal

Why don't we all start using BPS instead of BAUD to designate bits-per-second?
There's a lot of confusion over the proper usage of BAUD. Some people prefer
to say, "baud," because it can be said in one syllable, but we can pronounce
BPS in one syllable, too: "BIPS." Besides, BPS takes up less space when it's
written down or stored in memory. You won't have to type or store that extra
character. So let's use BPS instead of BAUD.

I can imagine the following conversation taking place sometime in the future:

"How fast is your modem?"

"Uh, it's an old, slow one, only 2400 BiPS."

"Man, once you've been at 19,200 BiPS, you'll never go back."

Seriously, I've heard the suggestion that the unit ``bits per second''
be called ``shannons''.
