[comp.dcom.modems] "USR Sporter 2400 problem"

sjflim@trillium.waterloo.edu (SJF LIM) (11/08/88)

I've posted a qusetion several weeks ago about an USR sporter 2400
having strange behaviour. Now I've found the problem but don't know
what is causing the problem. Hope there is someone out there that can help.

The problem is:

When the modem dials up to sytek(University of Waterloo) at 2400bps,
several short beep tones are heard (I've set ATM2); therefore causing
a lot of gabarages to dumped out of the screen. The beep tone is abnormal,
it is not the normal connect tone or other usual signal tones. When
I dial the number using a telephone and listen to the line, there is no problem,
no unusal sound is heard. Therefore the conclusion is my modem is sending some
strange signal when connect to sytek. There is no problem with ANY OTHER
SYSTEM OPERATING AT 2400BPS!! Does this sound familiar to anyone?
Does anyone has a similar problem? Any input will be useful.
Thank you.

Try setting your LocalNet modem (the Sytek box) to quiet operation,
and be sure your modem is set for answer-only operation. That will
eliminate any conversation between the two boxes, which is likely
to be the cause of your problem.
