[comp.dcom.modems] comp.dcom.modems

rbrewer@reed.UUCP (Robert S. Brewer) (11/30/88)

My parents are going to be going on sabatical to England soon. They
will be taking along a Mac, and they want to communicate with their offspring
(me and my brother) via electronic means. So, they will need a modem. However,
they need one that will work 'over there'. It would be nice if it worked over
here too.

When they were over there earlier this year, some guy quoted them
$1000 for a 2400 baud (bps, whatever) modem that would work in the UK. This is
of course outrageous. So, what protocols are necessary to get a modem to talk
at 2400/1200/300 in the UK? Are there any good, cheap modems that they could
buy here and take over (my father will be filling out a carnet [<-sp?] so the
customs thing will be taken care of)? Or is taking stuff made for dcom in the
USA to the UK illegal?

The modems we were looking at were the Anchor 2400E and the Practical
Peripherals 2400. Both claim to support some CCITT protocols, but are they the
right ones? I know very little about digital communications outside the USA,
so any help would be appreciated.

	Thanks in advance...

the PM2400SA (Practical Peripherals) does support CCITT v.22 bis which is the
American standard (equivalent of Bell 212A at 1200 and Bell 103 (I think) at
300 bps) for telecommunications at 2400 baud...

I dunno much about European phone systems tho.

It is my understanding (correct me if I'm wrong, I'd like to get straight
on this as well...) that V.22bis is the world wide standard for 2400 bps
modulation. It is a variation on V.22 which is the modulation standard used
in Europe for 1200 bps. Bell 212A is used in North America and it is not
much different from V.22 but different enough. Most modems that work at
2400 bps will also support V.22 as well as Bell 212A. On the Microcom modem
it is controlled by an AT command. If you want to communicate with
Europe at 1200 bps, than you want V.22. At 2400 bps, it doesn't matter (I
LOVE world wide standards!).
