[comp.dcom.modems] 2400 baud modem compat. question

jsm@phoenix.Princeton.EDU (John Scott McCauley Jr.) (01/06/89)

I am having problems with a Racal Vadic 2400 bps modem calling some
non-Racal Vadic modems, e.g. a USR 2400 modem.

Symtoms:
A 'CONNECT 2400' message appears and then garbage.
It looks like a baud-rate mis-match, but the Racal Vadic
is able to call other 2400 bps modems, and the USR 2400
modem can answer ok from others.

Can this be fixed with a rom change? If not, who is guilty of false advertising?

Are there any 2400 baud modems that work with *all* modems?

	Thanks,
		Scott

I've had the same problem when I've tried using the US Robotics modem
at MNP level 5. When I dropped it back to level 3, they were able to work OK.
Any advice on how to make the modems work at level 5 would be appreciated.

Is your trouble with *all* RV 2400's calling *all* USR 2400's, or just with
one particular unit of each kind?

I have a US Robotics Courier 2400 which gets along fine with everyone --
literally. I call a local BBS which uses RV modems. Do you think the
individual RV or the individual USR (or both) might be slightly out of
calibration, and where a small difference by either would not make any
difference, the accumulated mis-calibration of both modems is sufficient
to cause your problems.

I've seen that happen a few times before. I ran a BBS once, long ago, using
a Hayes 300 baud Smartmodem (remember those days?). I had many different
callers to the BBS, but one fellow consistently reported he could never
manage to log on; that I was always sending him garbage. His modem worked
fine everywhere else he called, so therefore it had to be my modem out of
whack, right? Trouble is, mine worked fine with everyone else except his.

Probably everyone's modem is slightly out of calibration - not *quite* at
the proper baud rate, but not noticable because everyone else is slightly
off. Its just a suggestion you might consider. Try several USR's if
possible to demonstrate to yourself it is not USR per se which is your
problem.
