I am currently working on a pilot project that requires 16 modems connected to a Sun 3/260. A majority of the activity will consist of TCP/IP/SLIP at 1200 and 2400 bps. One of the constraints is that we have large number of peer modems currently in the field. These are mostly Hayes 1200 and 2400 bps modems. It is secretly hoped that this can be slowly improve over time with higher speed error correcting modems. Nevertheless, the population is heterogeneous and likely to remain so. As such, I need to make an informed decision about the type of modems that will be purchased. Unfortunately, I am not that familiar will all the issues involved. Could someone give a brief synopsis concerning the current state of affairs? I particularly concerned with compatibility among the different manufacturers. What's standard and what's not? Any suggestions concerning a particular brand would appreciated as well. Thanks much, Jon L. Griffeth jon@chiron.UUCP
