I have a Supra 2400 baud modem. It works great, and is apparently fully Hayes compatible. There is one problem I'm having with it, and I wonder if anyone else out there has experienced similar problems. First system info: It's hooked up to a Sun 2/120 running SunOS 1.1 (don't look at me like that -- we're planning to upgrade. I don't think it's a software problem anyway). It's hooked up to a systech board (if this is meaningless, ignore it), and is used for both dialin and dialout using Sun's dual device system (if you open it with the high bit set in the minor device number, then it opens immediately, and you can call out. If you open it without it set, then it blocks on the open until carrier is detected, and noone is currently dialing out on it. It's a great system). Now that that's out of the way, here's the problem: If I dial out at 2400 baud, everything is fine with the world. I can dial in later at 1200 baud or 2400 baud, and it does the Right Thing (connects at the proper speed, and the software takes care of the rest). However, if I dial out at 1200 baud, then the next time I dial in, it connects at 1200 baud, even if I tried dialing in at 2400 baud. Anyway, I called Supra customer service, and they said that it was a problem, and the only workaround is to send a string (even AT\r) to the modem at 2400 baud after dialing out at 1200 baud. With the software we're using (tip), that's not very feasible. The funny thing is that I talked with Hayes at a conference, and they said (after saying that Hayes modems are so much better because they are guaranteed compatible) that what I described was a "feature" of Hayes modems as well (yes, he said "feature", although I would consider it a bug). Now, we're looking to buy some more 2400 baud modems, preferably for the same or similar price as the Supra. Does anyone know if other Hayes compatible modems have the same problem (or rather, which ones don't!)? It's tricky, because in order to be Hayes compatible, you have to have this bug (if you think it's a feature, let me know. I'm not convinced!). -- Name: David W.
