Question for the world... I've been using modems for more than a few years now and to tell you the truth, I don't know all that much about them. (hardware-wise) What is the maximum baud rate for a modem connected to a terminal? (i.e. from home) I own a Hayes smartmodem 1200 and I've got a DEC Scholar (2400 baud) modem which I got from work and use almost all the time. I've heard the Scholar modems are junk but it's worked pretty well for me since I got it. Okay, now to get to the point... If money was not an issue, what modem would people buy for themselves? Keep in mind I'm looking for something up to 9600 baud (if it's possible over normal phone lines) and preferrably the best quality modem available. Which modem by which manufacturer would it be? The modem must be able to send and receive at speeds of 300 - 9600 baud. (like most modems -- do they still make modems that work at one speed only?) If Hayes doesn't make the best, how do they stand in relation to the best? Any idea what a smartmodem 1200 will go for? Excellent condition, etc, etc. Reply to me or just send to this list. I'm sure there must be other people out there who could use a lesson on the basics...
