This seems to be the case *only* when *both* modems have
the release 4.0 firmware.
That's why all Dutch Telebit owners (as far as I know), still
use the 3.0 firmware.

I have had no problems whatsoever with cross-atlantic links and have
measured transfer rates up to 1200 bytes/sec.
