[comp.dcom.modems] Direct T1 interface

smir@pbhya.PacBell.COM (Sonu Mirchandani) (03/17/89)

The following is a request from a colleague, and I am posting this
on behalf of him. In responding to your questions, if any, I will
try to answer as soon as I can. If you wish to send replies directly
to me, feel free to do so. Either way, I will summarize, if there's
enough interest. Appreciate your time and thanks for the input.
Sorry if this has already been discussed.

Are there routers available that provide a T-1 rate serial
interface that meets the DSX-1 standards? The DSX-1 is a
signal that is T-1 framed 1.544mbps and connects directly to
T-1 equipment, such as a microwave link or T-1 switch
located close to the router (i.e. within 600 feet). This
would elminate the need to use the V.35 interface at the
router along with an external T-1 DSU/CSU (which costs about
$3k). Some of the functions provided by the DSU/CSU to
drive the long T-1 line are not needed for these short
connections. If this DSX-1 serial interface is available on
a particular box, how would the price of this interface
board compare with the straight V.35 interface?
