[comp.dcom.modems] Are These MNP modems any good?

rnicovic@polyslo.CalPoly.EDU (Ralph Nicovich) (04/13/89)

Recently I have seen an add in BYTE for a internal (IBM) modem
with MNP level 5 software. It was for the unbelievable price of
99 dollars. I called the vendor who of course claims these are
excellent modems.

The Manufacturer is PC Works, but I assume they OEM them.
We support MNP at Cal Poly and have had good success with it
however the modems I buy are VENTEL's and cost about 400.

Does anyone have experience with these PC Works modems ?

If so, in what environment and do you know if they support
the "break" function ?

I saw that ad, too. Note that it says "MNP 5 software" rather than
firmware. I believe that this is an MNP capable terminal program and a
cheap modem.

Please note that I am not in any way claiming that this is a bad deal.
I thought there was a public domain MNP 3 package around and would love
to sahre it with users if I could find it.
