[comp.dcom.modems] Compaq SLT/286 Laptop 2400 Baud Modem Probs.

rnelson@watdcsu.waterloo.edu (Randy Nelson VE3WRN) (04/22/89)

I was on top of the world. I took charge of my new laptop
on Wednesday. I read everything from front to back before I
opened the boxes. I wanted to do it right. Everything seemed
to be working out alright until I tried the internal 2400
baud modem. OH! WHAT'S THIS! I don't get any feedback from
the modem when I type in AT commands.
That was just the start of my problems. I began to realize that
the modem would seem to respond to commands including dialing a
number but then I would SEE nothing. I first used PROCOMM 2.4.2 then
thought it was flakey. I have tried QMODEM, TELIX, BOYAN with no luck.
I reread the manual and tried all the AT commands. I was still not
getting any response from the modem.
I was pretty frustrated at that point so I took the computer back
to the dealer. The technician took the computer into the back and returned
20 minutes later to tell me that it does work. He even put HAYES'S
SMARTCOM 11 on my harddrive. OH! it must be my fault. I was scratching my
head wondering which one of the umteen commands worked.
I returned home to discover that the modem will dial and answer using
the program the tech gave me. The PROBLEM is that I still get no verbal
responses or anything else from the modem. This is the only terminal prog.
that I can get to run. It is not that SMART! It is lacking in features. I
am writing this to rate the program but just cannot understand what it is
doing that 5 other terminal programs aren't doing. The other question I
have is why am I not seeing results of my AT??? commands. I see no
CONNECT or OK or anything.
If you own one of these computers with that modem or can offer me any
other help, I sure would appreciate it if you would send me e-mail. I am
climbing the walls to say the least.
Thanks for your time,
Randy

In article <5844@watdcsu.waterloo.edu> I write:

Ok! The joke is on me. I finally figured out the problem. I think we
can all learn from this. NEVER TRUST A TECHNICIAN TO SET UP *YOUR* SYSTEM!
It seems this wimp doesn't know how to set up this thing. I just went through
the setup procedure and discovered that he did have the modem set to COM2 but
the IRQ was at 4 not 3 as stated in the manual. I just about fell off my chair.
He also never activated the serial port on the rear. I didn't want to go near
the setup procedure in case I messed it up. I have since learned not to have
faith in those who should know what they are doing. I also discovered that
the printer was set to LPT1 with an IRQ of 5 and not 7 as was recommended
in the manual. I know where to look now. Thanks to those who tried to help.
Randy.
