I'm currently in search of a 9600+ baud modem for interactive use with a PC-based network. The dialup access will be through some remote-control type software, such as Carbon-Copy or PC Anywhere. Additionally, the modems will be used for medium to high-volume data transfers over dialup lines (most likely, connected to a minicomputer). Since one of the duties of the modems is for communications to overseas locations, some sort of error control is desireable, in addition to availability overseas. Primarily, I am considering the Telebit Trailblazer Plus/2500 and Hayes V-series 9600. Alternatively, I am also investigating US Robotics 9600 and 14 200 baud modems, however, I have been having some difficulties finding information on them (Does anybody have any information on the USR 14.2K modem??). The Telebit seems the better choice, due to it's 18000bps uncompressed transmission rate; and its multicarrier transmission scheme suggests that it would be more adaptable to low-quality phone lines. This is all fine on paper, but manufacturer's claims are not always reproducible in the real world. In light of this, can anyone supply any data regarding Trailblazer/Hayes availability overseas and possibly their performance on long-distance (overseas) phone lines? Any other suggestions/pointers would be greatly appreciated.
