A few months ago I bought an AMSTRAD PPC640D portable PC with an internal 2400 bps modem (V22bis) . This modem is called PC-2000 and Amstrad claims that it's Hayes-compatible. Unfortunately this modem, being the UK model, does not support the Bell protocols. When I issue an ATB1 command it returns an error code. The same happens with ATB17. The problem is that over here the CCITT standards are recommended but not enforced and many services still use Bell 103/212A instead of V21/V22. Unfortunately I cannot access any of this services. As the hardware for for Bell 103/212A is built in the modem, it seems that the firmware just inhibits this setting and the problem could be solveD by replacement of the ROM chip on the Modem board with one for an American model. Does anybody know a supplier of this item in the States? I would like also to hear from users of the American model of PPC64D about their experiences with the modem.
