There is a company, the "Computer Surplus Store" advertising in Computer Shopper, a MICOM 2400 baud external modem with MNP4 for $129. This seems like a real bargain, has anyone had experience with it. Our application is only in origination mode, with a dumb terminal, so the exact extent of Hayes compatibility is not a great issue. They say is is "AT" compatible. The real issue is how well the modem performs once a connection is made. For referenece we have used Everex 24E+ modems for the same kind of application. Most of the criticisms in this group of the modem match reaonsably well my own impression of the Everex. However, it is adequate the way we use it, and at $189 the problems are bearable. The question here, is will a $129 MICOM server equally well at a $60 saving. -- Ken Mandelberg | km@mathcs.emory.edu PREFERRED Emory University | {decvax, gatech}!emory!km UUCP Dept of Math and CS | km@emory.bitnet NON-DOMAIN BITNET Atlanta, GA 30322 | Phone: (404) 727-7963

Be careful of ads for super cheap MNP modems. Often when you read the fine print you find that it includes software for your PC that does the MNP part. Note that this could be acceptable if the software runs on your flavor of PC and it does what you want. -- Rod -- Rod Dorman rodd@dasys1.uucp Big Electric Cat Public Unix "The ships hung in the sky in much the same way that bricks don't"
