[comp.dcom.modems] MNP level 9 is a great plus with SLIP...

I finally got slip going at 19200 baud with the Microcom QX/V.32c modem. It
seems to do significantly better than V.32 modems without compression such
as the Telebit T2500. The best ftp performance I ever got with the Telebit
in V.32 mode without compression was 900 characters/second. I just got
1800 characters/second with the Microcom on /etc/hosts. On a binary, I got
1500 characters/second. Interactive rlogin performance seems much
faster with the Microcom. I expect further improvement once I get the
Microcom hooked up at 38400 so it can make full use of its MNP level 9
compression.

ping took a little longer. Between 279 ms and 352 ms instead of about 270-300
ms without compression. One rare ping got 233 ms, but the average seemed to
be 353 ms with compression at 19200 vs about 275 without compression. This
seems like a small price to pay for the improved throughput. Once we get
Van Jacobson's header compression, I expect a that the compression will work
even better because the compression won't be confused much by the headers
since they will be so tiny.

In summary, I think that the MNP level 9 compression on the Microcom is a
big plus.
