[comp.dcom.modems] Haba Systems, Inc. - Where are you?

dbell@blackbird.afit.af.mil (David E. Bell) (08/12/89)

Three years ago I purchased a HabaModem 300/1200 baud modem, which
is manufactured by Haba Systems, Inc. It has served my purposes very
well, until it seems that a lightning storm decided to make my life
tough. During the storm, the power supply was unplugged, but I didn't
unplug the phone line. Well, it looks like I must have gotten a surge
through the phone line since when I plug the modem in it immediately
takes the phone off of the hook and ignores any attempts to send
AT commands to the modem. I would like to look into getting the modem
repaired (if not excessively expensive) and am trying to get a hold of
Haba Systems, Inc. so as to comply with FCC regulations. Unfortunately,
the Technical Support number I have (818-901-0701) just rings endlessly
and nobody answers. Information for the 818 area code has no Haba
Systems listed. My question is - is Haba Systems still in business,
and if so, what is their new phone number. If they are no longer
in business, what is the best method for going about getting my
modem fixed (or should I just resign myself to having to spend more
money and buy a new modem (I wouldn't mind getting a 2400 baud modem
but my wife may not appreciate the expense 8^})). Thanks for any help
that can be supplied.

I've never had a problem with lightning coming in through the power lines.
I've had several modems die from lightning on the phone lines. I really
recommend that everyone use a good surge protector on the phone line. Look
for one of the ones made for fax machines. Also realize that they don't
protect the second line if you have one in a 4 wire cable.
