[comp.dcom.modems] Need HST setup for getty

paine@fungus.dec.com (Willy Paine) (09/13/89)

I am trying to add HST for incomming calls (getty). I am running
Interactive 386/ix (2.0.2). I did try to install HST but it won't
answer any incomming calls at all.

Can you please give me some information on HST setup include NRAM
and gettydefs etc?

Thanks in advance...

Hi Willy - I am running an HST (14.4 carrier) under SCO 2.3.2 using
the same configuration that I was using for Binkleyterm except to
not transmit a response code on auto answer - which appears to work
fine.

Interactive has an updated ASY driver that cures the problem with
uugetty (contact Brian @ ISC Hollis, NH).

Hi Larry,

I am sorry that incoming calls setup is pretty new to me and I have
no trouble on setting up outgoing calls for any modem. It would be
nice to give me more technical informaton. For your Xenix, just tell
me gettydefs, ttys, Devices, and modem setup.

Telebit is the only modem it works because I am getting excellent tech
information. I am still trying to install HST and Hayes 2400 and I am
getting ring with no answer at all.

Thank you..

willy

NRAM setting for HST (14.4 kbaud) (hang on - I'm still trying to
figure out how to dump the screen to a file using ProYam):

Hope this helps (I was never able to figure out how to get ProYam
to do an entire screen dump - the docs say ALT-Z but I can't find
the file it creates!).

What in the world is a "14.4 carrier" ?

The latest crop of HST modems actually run the carrier at 14.4 kbaud
instead of 9600 baud resulting in an increase of 50% in throughput.
With the modem properly configured - one should be able to get 1690
cps transfering archived files, and I've seen as high as 2510 cps
sending pure text (of course with compression enabled in the modem).
I keep my HST's locked at 38.4 kbaud, compression disabled and hardware
flow enabled to maintain the 1690 cps rates sending archived files.

This is interesting, are they useing more that two carriers to do this?
Well this modem talk to other V.32 modems?

I'm not sure how many carriers USR uses to get 14.4K, but i do know it is only
half-duplex, and the backchannel is only 450 bps. (kinda tough on those ymodem
transfers :-) ). The plain vanilla HST 144x will not connect to a V.32 modem,
However, USR markets a straight V.32 modem, and the Dual Standard which can
operate in V.32 or in HST 14.4K modes. USR has been plagued with 2400 baud
compatibility problems, it seems their 144x series don't like cheap 2400 baud
clone modems. The HST will connect with such a modem, but it will generate tons
of line noise, garbling (sp?) the connection. As of yesterday, I am waiting for
a replacemnt chipset to fix this problem.

Only one carrier - non-duplex. The V.32 is another beast that is available
in their "Dual Standard" - but I was talking (in the previous message)
about the "regular" HST.
