[comp.dcom.modems] Bloody Infotel piece of camel dung

unhd (Roger Gonzalez ) (10/03/89)

I recently purchased an Infotel 2400XP modem from Midwest Micro.
It seemed to work OK, except that it didn't return result codes.
Well, actually, the wierd thing was that it *did* return one from
ATZ. But nothing else. Even after making sure that it was in noisy
mode, I tried ATS0?. Nothing. ATI. Nothing. ATZ. 'OK'. Wierd.
I called MM. and told them about it. (Actually, I called them over
and over for about 3 days.. either they have only 1 line, or an
awful lot of broken products.) They thought it was wierd too, and
told me to send it in. After sending it in, and getting a new one
(the invoice said "BAD UART CHIP... REPLACE... SHIP TO CUSTOMER NO CHARGE")
I tried it and it did the *SAME* thing! I'm going to call them tomorrow,
but I spent $12.50 to send the stupid thing, and they didn't do jack
shit! I don't want to spend more money, if in actuality the MANUFACTURER
lied about the modems features. Has anyone used one of these? Are
they really lousy? I suppose I could ask for an exchange with a
different (same price) brand like the Zoom MX2400 or the Smart One 2400.
Any suggestions?
