[comp.dcom.modems] What's the current state of v.32 modems?

jwd@sas.UUCP (John W. DeBoskey) (12/05/89)

Hello,
could people using true 9600bps modems please tell me what
your experiences are?
I'm looking to buy one now and am wondering who's doing what
and if any special sales are in affect.(ala. Telebit while
back).
I'm running ISC 1.0.6 right now with an Anchor 1200.. I
want/need to upgrade.

                           Thanks for any help,
                                 John W De Boskey

We are using two V.32 modems at this time. The Multitech 932Ea and the
Racal-Milgo RMD3221/RMD3220 (Vadic 9632VP). I like the Racal modem over the
Multitech. It has two command modes where the MT has only the extended Hayes
"AT" command set. The only thing I wish Racal would do is put a on/off switch
on the modem.... I have tested both modems and they work well.

With non HP computers I have seen through put as high as 16,000bps. HP likes
to use Enq/Ack pacing (except on the XL machines) and this slows down the
through put some. I have seen >12,000bps with an old HP3000.

The Racal RMD3220 fits in the MDS2 chassis (16cards=16 modems). Soon (I hope)
their dual modem card will be available (16 cards=32 modems). MT doesn't have
an intelligent rack yet. The MDS2 is a mix and match rack. V.22b, V.32b, 208B, V.29, B801 auto dialer (RS366), dial back security (930), network mngt (910),
and soon V.42b will be added to their V.32b line.
