First off, thanks to all who responded. As always, the all-knowing Usenet
gave me all sorts of answers - with most right on target.
Basically, MNP5 provides data compression, in addition to the
error-correction from the lower levels of MNP.
The numbers varied, but the consensus seems to be that for uncompressed
textfiles, such as terminal sessions, MNP5 running over a 2400 baud line
will give an effective throughput of 4800-5600 baud, error free. The only
drawback mentioned was that the compression caused text to appear in clumps
rather than the dribble of a normal connection, but not badly enough to be
a major annoyance.
Once again, thanks to all who responded!
Take care-
