I am looking for a modem that will transmit *synchronous* full-duplex
data over dial-up lines at the highest possible rate (compressing, if
necessary).
V.32 seems to be the way to go. But all the V.32 modems that I've
heard of only compress when they are handling async data. Running
synchronous, they will give me 9.6Kbps, but no more. Can I do better
than that? Error correction is not needed, since I will be using an
error-checking protocol, but I suppose it's needed if the modems will
be compressing what they send.
Cost is not an issue -- I am willing to pay significantly more to get
the throughput.

Can I do better One problem is that the compression techniques used in the MNP5 modems operate on characters. Sync doesn't have character framing like async, I imagine this would complicate things some. Probably it is possible, but I haven't seen any. I have heard of 14.4K V.32 modems, but I don't know if I am allowed to give free advertising for the new owners of Tymnet. | Andy Behrens | andyb@coat.com | |uucp: {uunet,rutgers}!dartvax!coat.com!andyb |bitnet: andyb%coat.com@dartcms1 |Burlington Coat, PO Box 729, Lebanon, N.H. 03766 (603) 448-5000 Phil Nelson at (but not speaking for) OnTyme:NSC.P/Nelson BT Tymnet Voice:408-922-7508 UUCP:{pyramid|ames}oliveb!tymix!pnelson LRV:Component Station How 'bout those World Champion Oakland A's!!!
