[comp.dcom.modems] Own a Courier HST? Upgrade ROMs are free.

hrlaser@sactoh0.UUCP (Harv R. Laser) (12/17/89)

This may be OLD news or it may be NEW news.. I don't know as I
don't follow this group regularly.

If you own a US Robitics Courier HST modem you can get new
upgrade ROMs for FREE from US Robitics.. at least I did.

Call their offices voice at 1-800-DIAL-USR
Ask for Technical Support
(you might want to have a terminal program running on your
computer wherein you type ATI7 and the modem will spit back
its ROM versions and dates since USR will ask you for this
information when you call)
If you qualify for the upgrade ROMs they will be sent to you
free of charge. You install them yourself (I'm told it's
very easy to do, even for a hardware nincompoop like myself)
and then using the "RMA number" (Return Materials Authorization)
you will be given on the phone you return the OLD ROMs you
removed from your modem back to USR.

I phoned them yesterday, read them my ROM versions (produced
by ATI7 as per above) and was told yes I needed new ROMs and
that they'd be sent to me near the end of December and to
follow the instructions above for installation and return of
the old ROMs.

If you are not the registered owner of the modem based on USR's
records based on the serial number of your modem (it's on a
sticker on the modem's belly) they won't send you the ROMs, so
I'd suggest that if you buy a used HST from someone you arrange
to have the registration switched to your name and address.

Don't ask me for more information.. you now know as much about
this "deal" as I do. :-) Call USR for more information.

.. I beg to differ with you .. I called US Robotics last week and was
told I would have to pay $495 for the new ROMs .. It seems they are only
doing this with certain serial numbers ..
