One of the sites I feed has a cheap US Robotics 2400 baud modem which doesn't support any fancy protocols and I talk to it with a Microcom AX/2400c which supports MNP 5. Presumably, the Microcom should not be doing any fancy stuff with the data when talking to a "dumb" modem however I only get about 160cps effect transfer rate. With Hayes 2400 baud modems connected to Hayes 2400 baud modems, I'm used to getting up to 218cps with UUCP. I have reliable mode and compression available for dialins from modems that support MNP. Shouldn't that stuff be disabled automatically when talking to a non-MNP modem? Are these modems incompatible somehow? Does anyone have any ideas why this is so? Is there something inherently brain damaged about either modem or am I missing something?
