[comp.dcom.modems] what kind of cheapo 2400 bps modem should I get?

danj1@cbnewse.ATT.COM (Dan Jacobson) (03/05/90)

[Yeah, I know, how typical a posting.] What kind of cheapo 2400 bps
modem should I get? The cheaper the better. ...I plan to unplug it
between uses, so don't care if it remembers anything. It'll be hooked
to a simple terminal who's function keys will want to send it, say, an
AT sequence to dial a phone number. mmm... perhaps 2400-1200
switchability... That's about all I need. Also curious if I can save
even more if I have my phone do the dialing, so the modem doesn't even
have to dial. Mmmm, not into burning plastic smells---but willing to
learn :-)

I bought a Packard-Bell at my local Service Merchandise store for $119. It
seems to be an exact Hayes clone (at least all the software I've tried with it
to date works just fine). after 10 months, no problems yet (other than
occasionally having to reset the parameters to factory defaults after
encountering a Telebit).

One nice feature: status LED's on both transmit & receive data lines -
lets you know if there really is data moving.

I have no connection with either Packard-Bell or Service Merchandise other than
being a satisfied customer.

I bought a Micom for ~110.00 last Sept. It had 2400 baud/MNP 5.
It's on the other end of this loop, and so far does not seem to
give any prob.&*^$&^(*)
	CARRIER LOST

Service Merchandise does have some nice buys from time to time - just
as good as mail order prices. Hayes smartmodem 2400 baud modems on
a managers special of $269, VGA 16 bit Paradise video boards for $239
and Sony 1302/1320 monitors for $499/$589.
