[comp.dcom.modems] MultiTech V.32 Modems

NU013809@NDSUVM1.BITNET (Greg Wettstein) (03/14/90)

We are in the process of purchasing several sets of v.32 modems and are
considering the MultiTech MT-932E's. Our consideration of this vendor
is based on the fact that we have a large number of their MNP 5 Error
Correcting Modems (MT-224E's) both in house and in the field and have had
excellent performance from these units.

I am interested in any experiences that members of the net have had with
these modems. From my reading of the net it seems that their was a recent
evaluation of high-speed modems in one of the trade magazines which did
not rate these modems as favorable as others. In addition a number of
comments have been made in passing in this newsgroup that the MultiTech
modems have not been performing well.

The application which the modems are being considerd for will involve about
a 60%/40% mix of transfer/interactive usage. Good interactive performance
is essential since the targeted users don't understand concepts such as
low-speed reverse channels, buffer latency etc. All the users want is good
performance and very little trouble.

Any information, experiences and war stories would be appreciated. I would
like to thank, in advance, anyone who takes time from their schedules to
respond.

                                     As always,
                                     Dr. G.W. Wettstein

The industry trade rags don't know what they're talking
about. I ran an evaluation of V.32 modems for the
University and Multitech came out as THE BEST of all
modems. They connected to more other systems, were
easiest to configure (the Microcom farce QXV.32 was
the worst), and had best price/performance (our price
at the time was about $700).

I ended up buying a Multitech for home, and talk to
the Fastcomms at work (the Fastcomms are another excelelnt
choice, especially since they fit in those old Racal
racks everyone has laying around everywhere) with
no problems, as well as other Multitechs and unknown
modems across the country.

The Multitech is an excellent choice.
