[comp.dcom.modems] All the 9600 baud modems great and small

jamin@nunki.usc.edu (Sugih Jamin) (03/17/90)

I got only three replies to my previous posting. But anyway
here are the latest lists. Looks like I'm going to get a
MultiTech v32. If anybody knows of any reason why I should
not buy this modem, I'll appreciate it VERY MUCH if you would
warn me before I commit myself to it.

Thanks.

Scrounging through PCWeek, PC Magazine, MacUser, ComputerWorld,
Computer Shopper, Micro Times, and Computer Currents I came up
with this "best" deal list. I don't know anything about the deal-
ers, and don't have ties with any of them.

USR, Hayes, and Telebit have solid technical reputation. I use my
modem only for dialup to campus, but people on this newsgroup
said that USR is more widely used by BBSes, whereas Telebit is
the de-facto standard in uucp connection. Telebit is also reput-
ed to hold the line better.

I am using an Avatex 2400. I leave it on almost all of the time
and never had any problems with it; whereas Prometheus has given
me some bad experiences. People in this group gave conflicting
reviews on MultiTech modems. PCWeek gave an 8.2 to UDS against
six other modems (I don't know which).
