           DESCRIPTION
                  User Productivity
           FUNCTIONALITY
The high data rate of up to 12000 bps reduces connection time in PSTN
environments, and optimizes the line usage in private or leased line
           environments.
Automated functions such as autocall, error detection, data
retransmission, data compression, speed buffering, fall forward and
fall backward, and automatic switched network backup (SNBU) and
           recovery simplify operations.
           CAPABILITIES
USABILITY: The 7855 is available for leased and switched networks
covering a large set of applications. It has been developed to be
           used by nonskilled operators.
           PERFORMANCE:
           o High Data Rate
In a switched network environment, the high data rate
reduces the line connection time duration, leading to
communication cost savings. For batch applications such as
multiple site polling from a host computer during a limited
period of time (few night hours), the number of modems requested
at the host side depends on the data rate. For a given volume of
data, the higher the data rate, the lower the number of devices.
In asynchronous mode, data compression provides a data
transfer rate of up to 19.2 Kbps on the data terminal equipment
               (DTE) interface.
           o Full-Duplex Transmission Mode on Dial-Up Lines
This capability reduces the acknowledgement time by
suppressing the turnaround time requested by half-duplex modems.
This can represent up to 25% of the transmission time when
transmitting short blocks (range of 256 bytes) at 9.6 Kbps.
RELIABILITY AND AVAILABILITY: In order to maintain the connection
even in case of line impairments, the IBM 7855 is able, according to
the configuration setting, to decrease the data rate automatically to
           find the appropriate transmission speed.
When used on leased or private lines, in case of line failure,
the 7855 is able to establish automatically a backup connection
through the switched network and to return to leased operation after
           the failure is fixed.
INSTALLABILITY: The IBM 7855 V.32 Modem is a customer setup (CSU)
unit; installation procedures, configuration settings, and programmer
information are included in the Guide to Operation.
MAINTAINABILITY: Self-test of the modem is performed at power-on
time, and problem determination aids are explained in the Guide to
           Operation.
PRODUCT INFORMATION: All the 7855 information is given in a single
book delivered in the shipping group.
ADAPTABILITY: The 7855 installation can be performed without any
change in the other components of the network. This modem is
compatible with the IBM 5841, 5842, and 5853 Modems (with the
exception of the IBM command set) and compatible modems, and is
automatically adapted to the best capability of the modem at the
           other end of the line.
EXPLOITATION: The IBM 7855 V.32 Modem has been designed for easy use
           by providing the following:
o Several autocall capabilities, V.25 bis, the enhanced AT command
set, and the LPDA2 call out command.
o Several configuration setting possibilities, locally and
remotely, from the local modem, the modem front panel, or the
DTE. Access to the configuration parameters is protected by a
               password.
o Automatic backup on switched lines, at the same speed as on
leased lines, and with automatic return to leased lines at
               recovery time.
STANDARDS AND ARCHITECTURE: The 7855 complies with CCITT V.32 and
V.22 bis CCITT recommendations and Bell 212 and Bell 103 standards,
making it compatible with several modems already connected to the
           PSTN.

           EXPLOITATION:
o Line cost saving due to reduced connection time
o Few modems at host site for the same volume of data.
STANDARDS AND ARCHITECTURE: Compatibility with CCITT V.32, V.22 bis,
V.22, Bell 212, Bell 103, and MNP-5 implementation allows connection
to a large set of modems with a single 7855 V.32 Modem.
                  Growth Enablement
           FUNCTIONALITY
The high data rate and automated procedures will allow growth of the
volume of data to be handled, with limited investment in network
modification, and maintaining the same exploitation.
           CAPABILITIES
PERFORMANCE: Compared to the 2400 bps of the V.22 bis modem, the
7855 provides the opportunity to handle five times as much data.
INSTALLABILITY: If, for data throughput reasons, 5841, 5842, 5853,
or 5858 Modems would have to be replaced by a 7855, the change should
be easily performed, as the packaging volume of these modems remains
           at the same size.
ADAPTABILITY: The large possibilities offered by the configuration
setting allow the user to place the IBM 7855 in a network with
minimum or no change in the rest of the installation.
EXPLOITATION: The 7855, even when operating faster than the
currently installed modems, requires no more attention from the
operator and is as simple to operate.
STANDARDS AND ARCHITECTURE: The large set of modulation schemes --
           V.32, V.22 bis, V.22, CCITT recommendations, Bell 212, and Bell 103
-- make this modem normally compatible with the modems already
connected to the public switched telephone network and available in
           the business.
LIMITATIONS: The IBM 7855 V.32 Modem does not provide the IBM
           command set available on the IBM 5853, 5842, and 5841 Modems;
however, almost all function of the IBM command set is available from
the enhanced AT command set in the IBM 7855.
                  Investment Protection
           FUNCTIONALITY
The IBM 5841, 5842, 5853 (not using the IBM command set), and 5858
Modems and compatible modems are able to send or to receive data from
the IBM 7855 without any change.
           CAPABILITIES
USABILITY: The IBM 7855 may be introduced in the customer operation
with little or no impact on the existing products' usability.
PERFORMANCE: Data throughput of the 5841, 5842, 5853, and 5858 will
be maintained when they are connected to the 7855.
EXPLOITATION: Automatic data rate and MNP (2) level selection will

MACHINE REQUIREMENTS: The IBM 7855 V.32 Modem is a CCITT-compliant
V.32 9600 bps modem for switched networks. It transmits data at up
to 19200 bps in asynchronous mode when using data compression and at
           600, 1200, 2400, 4800, 7200, and 9600 bps in synchronous and
asynchronous modes (4800 bps and faster speeds all use the V.32 echo
cancellation technique). It operates in full duplex according to
Bell 103 at Telco rates of up to 300 bps, to Bell 212A at 1200 bps,
to CCITT V.22 bis at Telco rates of 1200 and 2400 bps, and to CCITT
V.32 at Telco rates of 4800 and 9600 bps. On leased lines and on the
public switched telephone network (when allowed by local regulations
and according to the line quality), this modem is also able to
transmit data at 12000 bps, in full-duplex mode, using trellis coding
and echo cancellation techniques. This modem allows performance of
autocall on the public switched network using the enhanced Attention
(AT), the CCITT V.25 bis command sets, and the IBM LPDA2 call-out
command. The 7855 also provides an interface to some type of
external Automatic Call Unit (not supplied by IBM). When
transmitting in asynchronous mode, the 7855 is compatible with the
CCITT V.42 recommendation using the Microcom Networking Protocol up
to level 5, which provides error checking, data retransmitting, and
           data compression capability.
It is classified as data communication equipment (DCE) and
functions with data terminal equipment (DTE) utilizing the CCITT
           V.24/V.28 (EIA-232-D/EIA-334) interface. As such, the IBM 7855 V.32
Modem can be attached to DTEs supporting modems utilizing that
           interface.
Through testing, IBM has verified operation of the 7855 V.32
Modem with the following IBM DTEs:
           o 3101, 3151, 3161, 3174, 3720, 3725, 3745, and 5394
           o System/36, System/38, AS/400 (TM), and 9370
           o PC and PS/2 (R) Model 30, 50, 55, 60, 70, and 80
o ROLM (R) CBX II and 9750 (US only)
           o RISC System/6000 (TM).
The IBM 7855 V.32 Modem is compatible with the IBM Information
Network dial services at the speeds and with the features supported
           by IBM Information Network.
            (R) Registered trademark of International Business Machines
              Corporation.
(TM) Trademark of International Business Machines Corporation.
AUTOMATIC/MANUAL DIALING: Data transmission over the public switched
network is initiated after a communication path is established.
Manual or automatic dialing may be used to establish the
communication path for the IBM 7855 V.32 Modem.
o Manual calls may be initiated by the DTE operator by using the
Data/Talk key on the modem and an associated telephone set.
o Automatic calls may be initiated by the DTE via the EIA-232-D
interface. Refer to the Programming Requirements section below.
o For the US and Canada only, automatic calls may be initiated by
the DTE with an Automatic Call Unit (ACU) (not provided with the
7855) attached to the modem via a modular connector. The
interface between the modem and the ACU must be functionally
equivalent to the RJ-45 type interface used in the US.
It is recommended that the user have available an additional
house phone (Bell Series 500/2500 or equivalent in the US or an
approved telephone set for the other countries) at one end of the
switched network to assist in network problem determination.
PROGRAMMING REQUIREMENTS: Software required to operate the IBM 7855
V.32 Modem is dependent on the specific application of the modem.
           IBM System/370 (TM) configurations with 3705, 3720, 3725, or 3745
           Communication Controllers, or 9370, Series/1 (TM), System/36,
System/38, and AS/400 configurations with communication adapters
allowing synchronous or asynchronous transmission over switched or
leased lines can use the 7855 V.32 Modem, and no unique software is
required. Current IBM system software, including ACF/VTAM with
ACF/NCP or ACF/VTAM-E, also supports manual dial and autocall via an
RS-366 Autocall interface with an ACU. The 7855/ACU interface is
available in the US and Canada only.
Autocall via the EIA-232-D/CCITT V.24 data interface is
supported on the IBM PC and IBM PS/2 using the Attention command set.
V.25 bis Autocall through the EIA-232-D/V.24 data interface is
supported by AS/400 and NCP Version 5 Release 3 on the IBM 3745
           Communication Controller.
NCP also provides the LPDA-2 call out command.

o Verifying that the original equipment manufacturer (OEM)
equipment operating with the IBM modem meets customer criteria
o Determining the required number of spares
           o Performing problem determination procedures.
SPARES: The customer should evaluate the number of spare modems that
may be required to meet the operational requirements of each customer
site. The number of spares required will be dependent upon the
number of units per site the customer has installed, the operational
requirements, and physical locations and layouts. In addition, the
customer should consider such items as response time of service
personnel (user or IBM) and proximity to support organizations. In
all cases, the customer should test spares for correct operation
before placing them on the shelf.
CABLE ORDERS: The 7855 is shipped with:
           o An attached power cord
o A switched line cord (2-wire switched line cord in the US and
               Canada)
o A 2/4-wire leased line cord in the US and Canada and in some EMEA
               countries
o A 2-wire and a 4-wire leased line cord in the EMEA countries
where different cables are requested to meet homologation
               requirements.
PROBLEM DETERMINATION: The Guide to Operation contains analog loop
self-tests and diagnostic procedures that allow Customer Problem
Analysis and Resolution (CPAR). The failing modem can be exchanged
           on site.

Shouldn't things like that have gone to comp.newprod? And it was even
too verbose and glossy for publication there. Sigh...

And the most important number - the price - was missing.

Another PR triumph by International BM.
