[comp.dcom.modems] MNP & SDLC

IDSC@EGFRCUVX.BITNET (06/26/90)

Hello,

I have two questions concerning MNP :

        1. Is it possible to use MNP on leased lines in addition to
           phone lines?

        2. If MNP can be used on leased lines, then can it be used in
           conjunction with SDLC?

Yes.

No. Why would you want to? SDLC provides its own error control,
and the overhead of running one error-control protocol on top of
another would be awful. You might want to do this in order totake
advantage of data compression; the CCITT is currently studying the
issue of providing compression of synchronous data on top of V.42
LAPM using V.42bis techniques, but it will be a couple of years
before there is a standard for this.

MNP uses a HDLC-like protokol. If you add another protokol like SDLC,
the data transfer will slow down (depending on hard/software).
