I got an Incomm 9600 MNP5 external one from Lyben Computer Systems in Troy, Mich ten days ago. I have been trying to test that modem. Unforturnately, there are not many 9600 MNP5 V3.2 sites availalbe right now. So I really have a hard time to convince myself the modem is compatible with Hayes and it works fine. So I really want to some BBS numbers with V3.2 support so that I can test that thing. Also does somebody out there know how to tell the answering modem is of V3.2 or not? Most, if not all, of the modems on the Online with Hayes BBS are
Hayes Ultra 96 (V.32/V.42bis/MNP5) modems. You can call on
1-800-US-HAYES, or 1-404-446-6336.
You can tell if the answering modem has V.32 if the 2100Hz answer
tone (the initial, 4-second-long tone you hear from the modem) has
phase reversals (sound like clicks) every one-half second. A
non-V.32 modem will give you a smooth answer tone without the phase
reversals. The purpose of the phase reversals is to cause echo
cancellers in the long distance telephone network to be disabled,
because V.32 modems provide their own echo cancellation.
The phase reversals in the answer tone are optional in V.32, but
virtually all V.32 modems do it.
