Thanks to everyone who responded to my inquiry on Cardinal modems. I also got email from several people. The summary is : everyone who's used Cardinal modems is satisfied with their reliability and Hayes compatibility. In addition, almost everyone recommended I spend the extra money ($139 instead of $89) for hardware MNP 5, since Compuserve and MCI Mail have already gone to MNP, and other BBS'es might do so, and most new users might buy some level of MNP. Based on these responses, I ordered the 2400 MNP from USA Flex (1-800-USA_FLEX); they said I should get it in 7 working days. If I have any problems with the modem, I'll post again. / Jon Sreekanth US Mail : J Sreekanth, 2 Ashford Court #3, Allston, MA 02134 Digital Equipment Corp., 77 Reed Road, HLO2-1/J12, Hudson, MA 01749 Voice Phone : 617-783-9401 eves, 508-568-7195 work

Hey Jon ! My tip is: *don't buy it !* (If it is the same modem like that, I bought from Cardinal). My wasn't a MNP modem, but was delivered with a (buggy and uncomfortable) terminal program which offered software-emulation of MNP. Resumee: 2400bps modem WITHOUT MNP5, terminal program WITH give about 4800bps, but totally dependence from the program (called 'FlashLink')... The Cardinal MB2400EX External 2400 Bps modem I have online here is not the same modem you purchased. Mine does indeed have _hardware_ MNP (levels 1 to 5), full flow control including CTS/RTS and XON/XOFF, and full Async and Synchronous support. I get very good throughput, even when transferring binary files. In fact, I see better than 250 CPS on larger files when UUCP sites with HSTs call twiki. On the average I around 210 to 219 CPS, with a high of 221 CPS with UUCP 'g' transfers - depending on the load that the site being called is handling. --- INTERNET: dalew@pdx.com OR dalew@twiki.pdx.com (Dale A. There is no mention of it in the 10 page manual you get with the modem. I have a lot of problems when I connect with a HST modem. I get loads of garbage on my screen, and file transfers take twice the amount of time they should. If there is MNP 1-5 in this modem, maybe you could tell me how to access it, since they don't tell you in the manual.

Then you either don't have the EXACT same modem I do, or you have missed an important detail in your documentation for the modem. > There is no mention of it in the 10 page manual you get with the modem. This could be your problem - doesn't sound like you have the same modem I do at all. I got a 44 page manual with my external MB2400EX modem. > my screen, and file transfers take twice the amount of time they should. The \Cx command selects MNP (\C0 disables it, \C1 turns MNP on with 200 char buffer, and \C2 turns MNP on and forces a wait for the char set by %A<char>). The %Cx command turns compression on (%C1) or off (%C0) which is your MNP level 5. I hope this helps you and others out. -- Internet: dalew@pdx.com OR dalew@twiki.pdx.com # The AS/400 Specialists UUCP: ..!{sun!nosun, tektronix}!tessi!twiki!dalew # WORK: A-38 Specialists Consulting Group, Inc. # Voice: +1(503)226-1662 P.O.
