[comp.dcom.modems] How to evaluate V.42bis compression ?

bagri@pdn.paradyne.com (Ravi Bagri) (07/24/90)

V.42bis algorithm is supposed to provide 4-to-1 data compression.
This compression ratio is data dependent as pointed out in many
previous postings.

Does anyone know of a good text file to test the through-put of
a V42bis modem ?
Can a 511 or 2047 psuedo-random bit pattern be used as data to
test the through-put of the modem ?

In simple terms, if I buy a V.42bis modem how can I test it to
see if I am really getting 4-to-1 compression (or close to it) ?

Thanks for your responses in advance.
