[comp.dcom.modems] Problems connecting two Hayes 2400 modems

Hello,

I have a problem that I would like to ask for help on. The application
seems simple enough, but I can't make it work.

Systems: 2 Hayes Smartmodem 2400 (not the 2400 *B* model) both being
run under PcPlus from PCs: 1 original IBM AT and 1 IBM PS/2
Model 80. The Smartmodem 2400's are both external types.

Intent: Run the Model 80 in PcPlus's Host Mode, and connect to it
from the AT in order to exchange files. The AT is in
Louisiana, and the Model 80 is in California. The carrier
is MCI. Connection is to be at 2400, N/8/1, Full Duplex.

Testing: Both systems are capable of using PcPlus to dial into a
university's LAN (the LAN server uses CTS Datacomm 2424
RMH rack-mounted modems, no MNP). They both work well,
connect at 2400 baud, and generally present no problems.
The university is in the same TelCo exchange as the AT.

Problem: With the Model 80 in PcPlus's Host Mode and the AT dialing
into the Model 80, an initial connection is invariably made,
however it is typically at 1200 baud even though PcPlus was
configured to make the connection at 2400 baud (i.e. the
connect downscaled to 1200, as if the Model 80's modem was
a 1200 baud modem). After connection, a few garbage char-
acters appear on the AT's screen, and then input on the
AT's keyboard is echoed back to it (RD and SD LED's on
AT's modem both flashing at the same time, normally) as
garbage, that is: keys pressed on the AT's keyboard are
echoed to the AT's screen as garbage. The carrier is not
lost, and no errors are reported by PcPlus.

I'm quite confused, this seems too simple to not work (famous last
words). If anyone can help me out here, I would certainly appreciate
it. I'm probably doing something grossly stupid; if so please let
me know and I'll report back to the net. Then we can all have a
good laugh! :-)

Thank you all for your time.
